| What do I need to do? Check that you know what you are expected to do, if you are required to give a presentation then ensure you have plenty of time to research, create and practice. Where do I need to be? Check where your interview is, what time you need to be there and how long it will take you to get there. What will I wear? Ensure that you have a smart outfit that it is comfortable and ready to wear. Research There are always brownie points at interview for those candidates who have done their homework. Be sure you know about the unit/organisation that you are applying to - be aware of who is who, protocols, births per year etc. Be up to date In short, read! ... articles, books, discuss, debate, take a good look around the site and ask questions. Your knowledge will come through in your interview as long as you relax and dont allow nerves to befuddle your brain! The night before.. Read through your notes and presentation etc the night before BUT put it away at least an hour before bed so you can try to relax. Try to get an early night so you are relaxed and refreshed in the morning. The Day Be sure to eat breakfast, the nerves will no doubt give you other ideas but you will need fuel to make sure your brain works at its very best! Read through your notes/presentation etc one last time. Ensure you leave in plenty of time. Remember to take your portfolio if requested, your notes, any handouts and your USB stick if you are giving a presentation. Always take a bottle of water, you will no doubt need it when you get nervous! Most interviews will have water available in the actual interview room but there's no harm in arriving prepared! The Interview Firstly think positive. Its easy to get caught up in the nerves, just think to yourself that you will give it your best shot. If you have to give a presentation....
We have all done it! If you have been asked a question and the nerves have made you waffle off the point and you haven't answered the question.......then stop. Say that you are aware you are waffling and can they repeat the question. The panel expect you to be nervous, it's normal, but they want to help you get your answers across, they want you to do well. They are not there to trip you up they are there to help you - remember that! Interview them to! It's very easy to run out of the door when they say the interview is over, but stop and ask any questions you may have. You are checking them out too, it's not only one way....... have one or two questions prepared beforehand and if they are not answered as part of your interview then ask away. Also be sure to ask them when you are likley to hear the outcome of the interview. Celebrate! Plan something fun for the evening of the interview, treat yourself. You have done it, you have prepared, done your best, remained as composed as you could and it's all over now. Stay positive, dont fret, the waiting is hard but you can come and chat with others on here and debrief! Be kind to yourself, dont beat yourself up if think you said the wrong thing, you very probably didnt! Good luck!
