Default New CMW - any advice?

Hi All,

I'm going out on the community after christmas for 6 months initially, on a 'see how you go and see how you like it' basis. I've been qualified three years and feel that the change will do me good.

Any advice from more seasoned community midwives???

In my opinion it is important that you remember that although you are out there alone you are never alone and never be afraid to ask for help or advice. It is very different from being in a hospital setting and it can be difficult as often you are out of your comfort zone, it is YOU who is the guest/visitor in someone elses house not them who is the visitor on your ward! You will come across many situations which are unfamiliar to you just remember that your values are not the same as everyone elses. I do feel that you will know within a couple of weeks if community is for you or not and dont be afraid to say so if you feel like a fish out of water as it doesnt mean you are a bad midwife or a failure it just means that you are more comfortable somewhere else and hey it would be pointless if we all wanted to be community wouldn't it?!!!
Finally good luck and if you enjoy it as much as I do you will be soooo happy. If there are any questions or worries I would be only too happy to help you.
