| Which journal(s) do you subscribe to? This follows on from a conversation that I had with my student, when she asked me which journals I thought were worth forking out on, bearing in mind she's on a bursary.

| I'm in the RCM, so automatically get the RCM Midwives journal. I find this one good for keeping upto date with professional issues. I also subscribe to Practicing Midwife. I like this one because it sometimes contains some "alternative" articles, that you may not get in the RCM one. - It was from reading this journal that I first heard of the practice of lotus birth, for example. In addition, I am a member of the NCT, so I get New Gen through them. This covers a wide range of topics, which are pitched more at parents. But it does still include some stuff relevant to midwifery..

| TPM is great for studes as its only £20 per year (student rate) and is brilliant for essays.

| Use(d) MIDIRS and TPM most for my BSc (& MSc hopefully) RCM and BJM are just like saturday or sunday supplements - all those ads for one semi-interesting article and i buy (back) issues of more esoteric journals from time to time (Midwifery Matters & Midwiferery Today for example) |

| I am an RCM member so get the 'midwives'. I find the quality of that has deteriorated since the 80s and I find the rationale for enabling cows' milk adverts very poor and although I am not an independent midwife, I found their treatment and lack of support by the professional body awful as well, BUT I feel I have to support it for political reasons as it is recognised as a trade union and a professional voice. I have access to the Practising Midwife regularly from a friend who subscribes so don't have to personally subscribe. I really like this one. Same friend also has NCT mags, Mother, Juno and mags/journals like that. The BJM has gone down over the years since it started - and so expensive - so I don't waste my money on it now .. I leaf through it in WHSmith and luckily can get access online should there be anything actually worth reading in detail. Again before online access was possible, I used to shell out for the quarterly Midwifery research jounal. MIDIRS is a must... and I still miss filing away the loose pages into the lever arch files- used to read them more. AIMS, Midwifery Matters, babylon |
