PREP stands for "Post Registration Education and Practice".

You can view an online version of the handbook here.

Once qualified you are required to re-register with the NMC every 3 years. At this point the NMC may ask for you to produce evidence of PREP. So, you need to be prepared, just in case.

You can keep a record of study days attended, workshops, evidence of post-reg learning etc. in a file.

It can be time-consuming. But, if you add to your PREP folder regularly, it doesn't need to be. I quite enjoyed adding to mine when I was first newly qualified. But, shall admit that I've not looked at it since my re-registration last year. oops!

Aha! so its like our CAP (continuous assessment of practice) folder. I see! Thanks for explaining, I had an idea what it was but I wasnt 100% sure.

What would constitute post reg learning other than study days? I wonder how the site could help.....

Well, I have a section for independent study so i suppose skills and research and discussion on here can go as part of independent learning.

As well as study days, you can add any good articles you have read and learnt from in your folder and put it down as PREP time. I get a lot of time fom MIDIRS.
I also put down reflection time with other IM's

Shosh/anyone please can you tell me a bit more about accountability and governance - do you mean accountability as in the NMC rules?

As I understand it, "Accountability" is each midwife's individual responsibility. We are trained and qualified to practice as autonomous practitioners and, as such we need to be accountable for our own actions and decisions made.

"Governance" are the systems in place in the establishment were we work, to ensure that we are working safely. This is done through written guidelines, ongoing training, risk management strategies etc. It is our responsibility to work within the given agreed guidelines. If we do so, making decisions that we are accountable for, and there is a problem / unexpected outcome, we would have the backing of our Trust. However, if we step outside of the guidelines and there is a problem, we may not necessarily have that backup.

- Please correct me if I am wrong.
